TrailRunner International appointed Alden Mitchell as president of its TrailRunner Sports unit on Monday after he spent 14 years at Nike.
Mitchell will oversee all operations for the sports marketing and athlete representation division starting immediately, the company announced.
The appointment comes as TrailRunner International expands its sports portfolio beyond endurance running into basketball, soccer and emerging sports markets in Asia.
Mitchell previously served as vice president of global sports marketing at Nike where he managed partnerships with professional athletes and sports organizations. He led Nike’s basketball strategy in China and negotiated endorsement deals with NBA players.
“We are thrilled to welcome Alden to lead TrailRunner Sports into its next phase of growth,” said TrailRunner International CEO Sarah Chen during the announcement.
Mitchell said the opportunity represented a natural evolution of his career. “The sports industry is experiencing fundamental changes in how athletes connect with audiences and brands,” he told reporters.
TrailRunner Sports represents 47 professional athletes across endurance sports, basketball and soccer. The division generated $34 million in revenue during 2023 according to company filings.
Nike confirmed Mitchell’s departure occurred on January 15 after 14 years with the company. He joined Nike as a sports marketing manager in 2009 and became vice president in 2020.
Industry analysts said Mitchell’s experience with global sports marketing will benefit TrailRunner’s international expansion plans. His track record includes negotiating partnerships with the Chinese Basketball Association and Japanese sports federation.
TrailRunner International operates five divisions including TrailRunner Sports, media production, event management and athlete representation services.
The company expanded from endurance running into major sports through acquisitions of three athlete representation agencies during 2022. TrailRunner now manages endorsement deals, media appearances and licensing agreements for athletes in 12 countries.
Mitchell graduated from Stanford University with a degree in sports management and earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He began his career at Wasserman Media Group before moving to Nike.
Background
TrailRunner International launched TrailRunner Sports in 2018 as an athlete representation division focused on endurance runners. The company expanded seriously into team sports in 2022 through acquisitions after securing $120 million in private equity funding.
The sports agency industry consolidated during the current decade with major players expanding internationally. According to industry data, athlete representation represents a $12 billion global market with the top 5 companies controlling 60 percent of endorsement agreements.
What’s Next
Mitchell plans to open TrailRunner Sports offices in Shanghai and London by December to support the NBA’s growing presence in Asia and Premier League soccer partnerships. The expansion will target Chinese basketball players and British soccer athletes entering the North American market.
The company expects Mitchell’s leadership to increase TrailRunner Sports revenue to $50 million during 2024 through athlete acquisitions in emerging sports and expanded international partnerships.
