The United States Senate approved a sweeping bipartisan infrastructure package on Wednesday, allocating $180 billion over a decade for road and bridge repair, clean water systems, and broadband internet expansion in underserved rural communities.

The bill passed 67-33, clearing the 60-vote threshold needed to avoid a filibuster, in a rare display of cross-party cooperation on Capitol Hill. The House is expected to take up the measure next week.

Senators from both parties praised the legislation as a practical investment in the nation’s deteriorating physical foundation. The American Society of Civil Engineers has long rated US infrastructure at a C-minus on its report card.

“This is government doing what it is supposed to do,” said the Senate Majority Leader at a press briefing following the vote. “We are building back what decades of neglect have eroded.”

The White House welcomed the passage, with officials saying the President looks forward to signing the bill into law if it clears the House. Opposition lawmakers expressed concerns about deficit spending.
