The Trump administration deployed Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers at airports nationwide to conduct immigration checks on arriving passengers.

ICE confirmed the expanded airport presence on Monday without disclosing how many agents were assigned or which terminals were affected.

The deployment marks an escalation of immigration enforcement efforts and follows Trump’s January 20 executive order directing federal agencies to strengthen border security measures.

Officials said the officers would question travelers, review documents, and detain individuals suspected of immigration violations. The operation began over the weekend and continued through Monday at airports including Los Angeles International, Chicago O’Hare, and Miami International.

Travelers posted videos on social media showing ICE officers questioning passengers at arrival gates. Immigration attorneys reported clients being held for additional screening after landing on domestic and international flights.

ICE spokesperson Leticia Zamarripa told reporters the agency was “conducting targeted enforcement operations at transportation hubs” as part of routine duties. She declined to specify how long the increased presence would continue.

The American Civil Liberties Union issued a travel advisory warning passengers they could face questioning about their immigration status. The group advised travelers not to sign documents without legal counsel present.

Airport workers described scenes of confusion as officers stopped passengers. A gate agent at LAX who requested anonymity said officers boarded at least 3 domestic flights Sunday to check documents before passengers deplaned.

Customs and Border Protection data showed 1,200 travelers underwent secondary immigration screening at airports during the past weekend, up from 400 the previous weekend. Officials said the increase reflected enhanced enforcement priorities.

Immigration courts already face a backlog of 3.2 million cases according to the Justice Department’s Executive Office for Immigration Review. The added airport arrests could further strain the system.

Major airlines declined to comment on the operations. The Transportation Security Administration referred questions to ICE, saying airport security screening procedures remained unchanged.
