SPORTEL Singapore 2024 brings 3,000 sports media executives to Marina Bay Sands
SPORTEL Singapore opened at Marina Bay Sands on Monday with 3,000 delegates from 70 countries, organisers announced.
The four-day convention returns to Singapore after a four-year absence and features rights negotiations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympics.
Broadcasters including ESPN, Fox Sports, and China’s Tencent Sports attended the opening ceremony. The event generates an estimated $15 million in tourism revenue for Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board said.
The convention runs through Thursday and includes panel discussions on streaming rights, artificial intelligence in sports production, and women’s sports coverage.
Background
SPORTEL began in Monaco in 1990 as a meeting place for sports rights holders and broadcasters. The organisation expanded to Asia in 2015, choosing Singapore as its regional hub due to the city’s strategic location between European and Asia-Pacific markets.
The last Singapore edition in 2019 drew 2,500 attendees and facilitated $200 million in rights deals, according to official figures. The 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.
What’s Next
Organisers will announce the host city for SPORTEL 2025 on Thursday. Singapore, Tokyo, and Sydney are competing for the contract, Laurent Puons, SPORTEL CEO, told reporters.
